Newborn Screening

The state of Ohio requires that all babies be screened for disorders that can be serious if not treated soon after birth. Even if your baby looks healthy, he or she might have one of these disorders.

The Newborn Screening Program for genetic, endocrine and metabolic disorders identifies newborn babies who may be at risk for one of several serious diseases. If left untreated, these diseases can lead to slow growth, blindness, mental retardation, and possibly death. Finding these problems early and providing appropriate treatment may prevent many serious complications from developing later. Ohio currently mandates testing of all newborns for 32 disorders.
